Our academic staff have unrivalled, practical and theoretical knowledge of the many branches of enquiry that make up Development Studies (political economy, globalisation, migration and displacement, conflict, agrarian change, labour movements, political ecology and institutions to name a few). SPD’s role is to strengthen the design and implementation of IE, and its involvement can occur at three different levels: a) advising teams on general evaluation questions; b) reviewing terms of reference and/or results matrices and supporting the team in the definition of the evaluation design (sample size, definition of indicators, etc.); and c) in a more substantive role, in which a SPD member participates as full team member, responsible for the evaluation component of the project.

While other theories of career development stress that vocational choices are determined by persons and their environments, these same theories also fail to take into account the behavior of the individual in influencing particular situations which can in turn then affect their thoughts and subsequent behaviors.
Our department takes a heterodox approach, seeking not only to understand the major drivers of development, but also to critically evaluate them with a view towards informing more just and equitable approaches to of our staff come from development practitioner backgrounds and this informs what we teach.
