The law originally began as a petition that as created by a digital rights activist, with over 114,000 people signing it. This big response prompted the FCC to work with US Congress and networks to devise a resolution. The result was the issuance of the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.

According to the language of the bill, you may have any smartphone unlocked without breaking the law. You can still get your phone unlocked through your carrier if your contact is paid up, but there are plenty of obstacles to go through to get it done.

The better – and easier – route to take is to have a third party company unlock your phone for you.
